The Buckland Play
2006-2007
The Mummers Play was revised in 2006, to accommodate four new characters. Johnny Jack, arrived to collect - ousting Johnny Cunny. The Winter King was replaced by a Winter Queen. But significantly, our hobby horse Chatterley obtained a part as the fortune telling horse of Drake's Groom. In 2007, the Fool returned.

The Buckland Play 2004-2005
The Mummers Play performed by DBM is called The Buckland Abbey Play and was originally performed at Buckland Abbey in 1990. It is therefore not a play that is centuries old but draws from many different traditional texts for it's structure and characters. The usual protagonists are St. George and the Turkish Knight, these are replaced by Sir Francis Drake and Philip, King of Spain. They work against a background of several stock characters notably: The Winter King (Old Father Time), the Introducer (Chorus), Mother Dolly, Mother Christmas and Johnny Cunny; and of course the Doctor. Sir Francis and Philip both also have a retinue in the shape of 'men' who perform an Upton-upon-Severn-Stick dance in the climatic scene. The play has been pared down over several performances and many rehearsals into what is now performed today. If there was no tradition before - there is now.
